Title 18 Chapter 44 Section 922(r) of the United States Code, defined further by Title 27 Part 478.39 of the Code of Federal Regulation (CFR), restricts semiautomatic rifles and shotguns to no more 10 imported parts from a list of 20 parts. View QuoteDoes not mention importers but it does state "any person".please read below. They also labeled their pre-ban AK’s “AK-56s” to indicate they were semi-automatic. This applies to the ‘Type 3’, milled, stamped, and all others. To make things a bit more confusing, the Chinese call all their AK’s and SKS’s “Type 56”. Technically, it’s a hybrid between an AK-47 and an AKM.

The Legend and Milled MAK-90, interestingly, have a press and pin barrel, which was the only AKM feature they adopted. The Chinese made more of a true Type 3 with screw in barrel during the Vietnam era. These are all requirements of the 1990 US Assault Weapons Ban, hence the name, “MAK-90” (“Modified AK - 1990”) Barrel is not threaded, no bayonet, and there is no sling attachment on the rear of the receiver because of the slant cut. The only other differences are pretty much superficial. (I read somewhere that it is the same slant cut used for a milled underfolder, not sure if that is correct). Except of course for the slant cut rear receiver, which isn’t that big of a deal. It is basically the same thing as a Polytech Legend, which is the pre-ban Chinese version of a Type 3 AK-47 (not AKM).
